Charleston, SC - Part I

Earlier this year, my old college room mate and I decided we wanted to get away for a weekend on a quick trip out of the city. So in the middle of May we had planned to head down to Savannah, GA. We rented this beautiful apartment right near the part and were flying out Friday night in hopes to be there by 11pm. Unfortunately, our changes had planned. We took the train all the way out to the airport to find out our flight was cancelled. Bummer. They had "rescheduled" us on a flight the next day leaving NY at 2pm to arrive in Atlanta with a 2 hour lay over THEN flying to Savannah and not arriving there until 9:30pm! Can you hear my unhappy tone through this post?

We were already losing a day that we had paid for on the apartment, now we were going to lose a WHOLE day of our trip because they just cancelled flights, cause they can! Not happening sista! After making friends with a poor bride-to-be behind us who had her flight to Michigan cancelled and was going to miss her bridal shower, seriously poor girl, we decided to tell the nice airline woman that we had a wedding in Savannah at 2pm tomorrow so there was NO WAY we were going to be on that 2pm flight to Atlanta and miss our wedding. After a little attitude and excuse making, the manger came over and put us on the first flight out to Charleston at 8am.

Blessing in disguise.

We actually had talks about taking a train ride up to Charleston from Savannah for a day since it was only about an hour and forty minute train ride, but this had actually worked out for the best. We smiled thanked the kind woman and headed back to Manhattan to do it all over again in the morning!

waiting for the subway to head back to the Manhattan.

Did I mention this was a blessing? Charleston was beautiful!! Everything about this city from the old historic houses, to the little shops on King St, the markets and the people! Ahh! I was amazing after the last 18 hours we just endured. The people, SO NICE! Since we weren't staying long and we had no place to leave our bags, we spoke with a woman in the airport about the best way to get downtown, what's the best places to see in a day and how to get to Savannah the quickest and cheapest. She was the most helpful woman! She gave us map after map, phone number for every line of transportation and even called the train station and bus to see the times they were running to Savannah. Blessing.

Once we arrived downtown we headed to the Information Center to see if there was anyplace we could leave our bags so we didn't have to lug them around all day in the finally 80 degree weather. Again, second nicest lady snuck us behind the desk into her office and held out bags ALL DAY!!! She gave us some more places to see on our trip and sent us on our way. Blessing.

Our first stop was the market in Marion Square. They had the cutest little stands selling pickles, fresh veggies, homemade salsa and jams. They also had flowers and hats, homemade pottery, which was beautiful and a bunch of amazing food vendors. AMAZING!

I'm not sure if Roti Rolls are in the market every weekend, but if they are there GET THEM! They were so unique and tasted amazing! Definitely wish there was one in New York!

After the market, we walked down King Street and headed down a few side streets so we could take a look at the architecture. It is truly amazing that most of the buildings were built back in the 1700s. History at it's finest.

For lunch we ended up at the Southend BreweryI love craft beer so this was the perfect place to grab a cool drink after our long walk throughout town. We originally planned on sharing a flight, a flight is about 4oz of different beers on tap, but when we found out we were getting 7 different beers for $10, we took two! First of all a flight up north is typically 3-4oz of 4 different beers for like $20. Ridiculous I know. We had to take advantage of the great price and home brewed beer! They all were amazing! I've always been a little intimidated by a Stout because I don't prefer Guinness, but I really enjoyed theirs and may have found a new favorite.

I know this was picture overload so I will be back for Part II of our impromptu trip to Charleston!
