Charleston, SC - Part II

If you missed the beginning of my trip to Charleston, you can find Part I here.

So for some strange reason the battery on my camera died and when I tried to switch out the batteries it was stuck and wouldn't come out. I was NOT going to be coming home to tell my boyfriend I broke the camera trying to get the battery out like an idiot so I tucked it away and used my cell phone for the remainder of the day.

We decided to continue our walk through town and head towards the water. It was a pretty hot day and the cool sea breeze felt amazing.

We walked along the water as we headed back toward the center town and it was just beautiful. After the drama with our flight it was just so nice to stroll around and relax. As we walked along the water we ended up in a part of Charleston called "Rainbow Row". This is a street of homes that are all painted a bunch of different bright colors. These homes were built back in the 1700s and it was, again, so cool to see such history. Plus the fact that people were so fun and clever back then to paint homes this way.

Since we were only staying for the day, we didn't want to waste the entire day on a carriage doing a tour. After the fact I realized, we probably should have done it but we were strapped for time. I highly recommend doing the tour! Like I said there is SO MUCH history here it would have definitely been worth it. Since we were walking around seeing everything we possibly could by ourselves, we took advantage of the tours happening around us and we would stop and listen to hear what the guide was saying. Can we say perfect timing on this house below. We just so happened to catch the guide telling his tour that parts of The Notebook were filmed inside of this mansion! As well as a bunch of other famous movies. He lawyer who owns the house now actually allows tours throughout the house if you are interested. If we never had stopped we would not have known that fun fact! So much history. I will definitely be doing a full tour the next time I get to visit. I can only imagine what else there is to learn about this little place.

Below are just a bunch of beautiful mansions we walked past and I had to capture to show my family back home. A girl can dream can't she?!!

As you can see Charleston was amazing!!!  I seriously can't wait to come back and visit again and get to see many more amazing things about it! If anyone is traveling and would like so recommendations let me know!

Charleston, SC - Part I

Earlier this year, my old college room mate and I decided we wanted to get away for a weekend on a quick trip out of the city. So in the middle of May we had planned to head down to Savannah, GA. We rented this beautiful apartment right near the part and were flying out Friday night in hopes to be there by 11pm. Unfortunately, our changes had planned. We took the train all the way out to the airport to find out our flight was cancelled. Bummer. They had "rescheduled" us on a flight the next day leaving NY at 2pm to arrive in Atlanta with a 2 hour lay over THEN flying to Savannah and not arriving there until 9:30pm! Can you hear my unhappy tone through this post?

We were already losing a day that we had paid for on the apartment, now we were going to lose a WHOLE day of our trip because they just cancelled flights, cause they can! Not happening sista! After making friends with a poor bride-to-be behind us who had her flight to Michigan cancelled and was going to miss her bridal shower, seriously poor girl, we decided to tell the nice airline woman that we had a wedding in Savannah at 2pm tomorrow so there was NO WAY we were going to be on that 2pm flight to Atlanta and miss our wedding. After a little attitude and excuse making, the manger came over and put us on the first flight out to Charleston at 8am.

Blessing in disguise.

We actually had talks about taking a train ride up to Charleston from Savannah for a day since it was only about an hour and forty minute train ride, but this had actually worked out for the best. We smiled thanked the kind woman and headed back to Manhattan to do it all over again in the morning!

waiting for the subway to head back to the Manhattan.

Did I mention this was a blessing? Charleston was beautiful!! Everything about this city from the old historic houses, to the little shops on King St, the markets and the people! Ahh! I was amazing after the last 18 hours we just endured. The people, SO NICE! Since we weren't staying long and we had no place to leave our bags, we spoke with a woman in the airport about the best way to get downtown, what's the best places to see in a day and how to get to Savannah the quickest and cheapest. She was the most helpful woman! She gave us map after map, phone number for every line of transportation and even called the train station and bus to see the times they were running to Savannah. Blessing.

Once we arrived downtown we headed to the Information Center to see if there was anyplace we could leave our bags so we didn't have to lug them around all day in the finally 80 degree weather. Again, second nicest lady snuck us behind the desk into her office and held out bags ALL DAY!!! She gave us some more places to see on our trip and sent us on our way. Blessing.

Our first stop was the market in Marion Square. They had the cutest little stands selling pickles, fresh veggies, homemade salsa and jams. They also had flowers and hats, homemade pottery, which was beautiful and a bunch of amazing food vendors. AMAZING!

I'm not sure if Roti Rolls are in the market every weekend, but if they are there GET THEM! They were so unique and tasted amazing! Definitely wish there was one in New York!

After the market, we walked down King Street and headed down a few side streets so we could take a look at the architecture. It is truly amazing that most of the buildings were built back in the 1700s. History at it's finest.

For lunch we ended up at the Southend Brewery. I love craft beer so this was the perfect place to grab a cool drink after our long walk throughout town. We originally planned on sharing a flight, a flight is about 4oz of different beers on tap, but when we found out we were getting 7 different beers for $10, we took two! First of all a flight up north is typically 3-4oz of 4 different beers for like $20. Ridiculous I know. We had to take advantage of the great price and home brewed beer! They all were amazing! I've always been a little intimidated by a Stout because I don't prefer Guinness, but I really enjoyed theirs and may have found a new favorite.

I know this was picture overload so I will be back for Part II of our impromptu trip to Charleston!

The Weekend...through the eyes of a cell phone

Hopefully I don't jinx myself, but I think the storm has passed and I will have a little more time for me and catching up on blog posts, reading my favorite blogs and just life in general. Things aren't going to completely calm yes because....

THE NY RANGERS ARE IN THE STANLEY CUP FINALSS!!!!!!!!!

Holy guac! Talk about stressful times over here. If being insane at work wasn't enough for the last few weeks, coming home to watch the playoff games has aged me about 10 years..100% worth it! This has been 20 years in the making and I am super excited to witness it! Ahh! I don't even know what to say it's so exciting. Hockey in my family, is like the Super Bowl to most grown American men. IT'S HUGE! Wish us luck this week!! :)

After that exciting event Friday I was exhausted! But, like I said things never truly calm down around here. My dad had cut his finger at work and drove himself to the ER in the afternoon. Not the smartest decision but I digress. He ended up with 10 internal and 20 external stitches from the plastic surgeon and has his hand wrapped looking like Captain Hook. Staying humorous in these situations makes them a little easier. Poor guy is out of work for 6 weeks plus physical therapy....basically he is on summer vacation.

Saturday the family headed off to our neighbors wedding! It was beautiful, but aren't all weddings? I seriously am still getting used to the fact that friends I have grown up with are starting to get married! Where the heck does the time go?! I loved spending the time with my family and me and my brother are just fools when there is alcohol and music involved.

The weather this weekend was beautfiul and we refused to stay indoors any longer. Last minute we decided to buy tickets to the Sky Blue FC to watch some women's soccer. We love the USA Women's Team and we always try to see some of the players that are traveling to our are when we can. Last year we actually watched them play Germany in Conneticut which was one of the best games I've seen. Anyway, we were able to watch Hope Solo and Sydney Leroux play from the Seattle Rein. They eneded up winning 3-1 which was pretty cool. I always feel a little strange when the crowd is cheering more for the away team, but thats who we were there to see!

Again, after all this excitment I was exhausted we came home to lay down and find out who was going to be playing our Rangers in the finals. Turns out we are headed to LA on Wednesday to play the Kings after they beat out the Chicago Blackhawks in OT. My nerves are on fire!

Hope everyone had a great weekend!
